FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

What do you pay a transcriptionist?

Usually, the first thing that people want to know is – how much do you pay? Let’s just be upfront and get this out of the way.

In OCTOBER 2024 our highest rate was $1.88/minute of recording transcribed, with the lowest rate $0.93/minute. The average rate over the month was $1.23/minute.

The rates we offer our team vary depending on the specifics of the client’s order. The more time or skill it takes to transcribe a project (e.g. timestamps, poor audio quality, more than two people talking), then the higher the charge will be to the client. In turn, the higher the rate for the typist.

Just to be clear from the outset, we do NOT want to shortchange our transcriptionists. This is not what Transcript Heroes is about, and never will be. We pride ourselves on beating the average hourly rate for transcriptionists working in Canada. As a company, we also commit to enabling contractors to hit above the Canadian Living Wage.

Transcript Heroes pays the highest or near the highest, transcription contractor rates in Canada. Having fair and generous rates has meant that many of our loyal team have been with us for a number of years.

Is being a transcriptionist contractor for me?

This is a well-paid work from home contract for people who view themselves as established and professional transcriptionists.

We engage independent contractors to provide their typing services to us across a diverse range of projects. When you contract with us, you are treated as a business owner, not an employee or part-time worker. In this dynamic, we take on the role of clients rather than bosses and we offer projects that you to accept, or decline.

We recognize that for some of our contractors, transitioning from an employee mindset to a business owner mindset may be something new.

Running a business provides considerable freedom, but it also carries specific responsibilities. While we can provide guidance and answer your questions about templates, style, specific projects, etc., we simply do not have the resources to train transcriptionists. We need a contracting team that are seasoned professionals; you understand your role as a business owner who provides a service, rather than an employee under a boss’s supervision.

If this is an entirely new concept that you are a “business” (even if it is just you working out of your living room) that is providing a “service” that we are buying, then please take the time to consider if this kind of working relationship is a good fit – before – you send in your application. We need a good match on this.

How will I get paid? – Monthly Invoice.

There has been in the past some confusion about this. So, as a contractor, you will email your invoice detailing the month’s projects that were due. We compare this to our records, and usually, within 14 days, payment will be made to your bank account.

How can I get a job with Transcript Heroes?

Our acceptance standards for applicants are high. We give our clients a 14-day 200% Guarantee on accuracy and timelines and so we need our team to have standards that are equally high.

If this sounds like you, great! We look forward to hearing from you.

When will I know if my application has been successful?

Please note that we get 10–15 applications a week, so we will only contact applicants we are certain will make it to the next stage of the process. If Human Resources approves your application (the team usually does a review every couple of months), we will contact you for a quick test and a phone interview. If you have not heard from us, then this will mean you have not progressed. Good Luck!
