3. make good money transcribing
There is no flat rate for typing. Instead, Transcript Heroes typist rates go up and down depending on what we charge the clients. Overall though, we aim to beat the average hourly rate for medical transcriptionists.
The more complicated and harder the transcript – the higher the rates we charge the client, and therefore the higher the typist rates. Based on some recent stats as at March 2020 the top rate was $2.98/minute of recording transcribed (with the lowest rate over the month being $0.79/minute). Looking at the average transcription rate for the month it was $1.39/minute.
The rates go up for faster processing, difficult audio, multiple speakers or video with timecodes etc. As an example, a project that is a clearly recorded 100-minute speech with a 3-day turnaround might be offered at a rate of $1.23/recorded min. Once completed, the typist who completed the project would be paid approx. $123.00.

Transcript Heroes is one of the top transcription companies in Canada. We provide transcription services to a broad range of clients including those from the video and film industry, academic institutes, as well as the legal and market research sector’s.
The process starts with the client. The client submits their order and audio file(s) to your Project Manager. The file is then sent to you (the transcriber), along with a list of instructions or a template. To enable you to transcribe the file we recommend you have the following transcription gear.
- stable, reliable internet connection
- a computer
- foot pedal and
- headset to free up your hands
- transcription software
- time tracking software
- file converter
- text expander
- dictionary
Once you have transcribed the file, it is sent through to our quality control then back to the client for review.
